Private hiking tours in Tuscany: Val d’Orcia, Elba island, Giglio island, Carrara marble mountains, Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park
Tuscany is a beautiful region that offers, besides its stunning art towns, even an uncomparable countryside. Our Tuscany hiking tours stretch from the heights of the Apennines and of the Carrara marble mountains (called Apuan Alps) through the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia (Orcia River valley), gorgeous region located south of Siena and UNESCO site itself, as far as the coast of Maremma and the islands of Giglio and Elba which offer uncomparable scenarios with the opportunity to take a swim.
The Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National park stretches between two regions (Tuscany and Emilia) and offers a wide range of landscapes and type of footpaths suitable for both very expert and for amateur hikers. Very interesting and challenging Tuscany trekking tours can be held both in the Emilian and in the Tuscan side of the Park. The Emilian side of the Nationa Park is renown to be the Parmigiano Reggiano region, dotted by hundreds of lakes surrounded by green meadows that feed the cows that produce the milk used for making the King of Cheeses. On the Tuscan side stretch several valleys leading to Lunigiana a quiet and pleasant region with lush vegetation, pretty villages and parishes.
The Apuan Alps also called Marble Mountains are included in a Natural Park. This is a short mountain range that detaches from the Apennines and runs for approx. 30km parallel to the Thyrrenean sea coastline. In the area of Carrara the footpaths run through and all around the marble excavation areas, where people have been extracting, transporting, carving the white marble for 2000 years. Along the same mountain range, there are many other footpaths to enjoy, the ones running along the World War II frontline, or stretching all the way to the highest peaks.
Very close to the northern Tuscany parks above mentioned there is the Cinque Terre National Park, another paradise for hikers. A Tuscany and Liguria hiking tours could include one or more trekking in each one of these parks, simply unmissable!
The Val d’Orcia is the beating heart of Tuscany, the entire valley is a UNESCO site itself for the perfect preservation of the landscape carried on throughout the years, in short, the Tuscany of the postcards! This valley is the home of charming villages like Montalcino, San Quirico, Pienza, Montepulciano and many many others; here are made some of the most famous wines in the world line the Brunello di Montalcino and the Nobile di Montepulciano. Here the footpaths stretch along rolling hills, passing through the villages, isolated parishes or imposing abbeys like Sant’Antimo, simply gorgeous.
The Tuscan Archipelago is made of 7 islands located a few miles from the Tuscan shores. Two of the most beautiful islands are Giglio and Elba. is very small and a Natual Park entirely protected, for 90% it is wild and uncontaminated, a true paradise for hikers. Elba island is much bigger than Giglio, here there is a wider variety of trails to walk and landscapes to enjoy, during a week stay is possible to alternate the hikes with the visit to cultural sites like the Napoleon villa, the Medicean fortress in Portoferraio and the characteristic villages sometimes located by the sea, sometimes on mountains tops.
