Tuscany bike tours – Cycling in Lunigiana, the land of castles

Lunigiana is the gateway of Tuscany, explore the and of castles guided by a former professional cyclist

Lunigiana region is part of Massa-Carrara province, is located in the northernmost of Tuscany. It’s a hilly-mountain region rich of castles and medieval villages with uncontaminated nature. The three main towns are Aulla, Fivizzano and Pontremoli.

The bike tours that we designed include some relaxed pedaling on bottom valley roads, some gentle climbs on the hill-tops where castles are located and naturally some challenging ascents to enjoy these unique panoramas.

PLEASE NOTE that all these tours are designed to make you discover the natural and artistic beauties of this region at your own pace, stop for taking pictures and taste local specialties with no hurry. Some of them are suitable for all, other ones can be cycled by people with some training and practice for cycling. Food tastings are always included to let you experience not only sweat and toil but also the local specialties.

The”route of parishes” cycling tour of Codiponte, Gramolazzo lake, Carpinelli pass, Piazza al Serchio – 8 hours

Bike tour along the Aulella and Lucido rivers valleys, enjoy cycling among green hills, chestnut woods, ancint parishes and villages as far as the stunning Gramolazzo lake. Depart from Aulla with and ride up the Aulella valley as far as Codiponte, unmissable is the visit of the local parish (VIII° cent. A.C.); then keep pedaling through Casola and here taste the local famous “chestnut bread” tha will give you the power to arrive at Gramolazzo lake. Here have a pick nic for recover a bit, then jump again of the seat and return to Aulla doing a different route.

The “bread route” cycling tour of Licciana, Fivizzano, Agnino, Aulla  – 6 hrs

Bicycle tour that takes place along the Taverone river valley that stretches towards the Apennines among chestnut woods, castles and medieval villages. Once arrived at Bastia castle ride downhill to Fivizzano, one of the largest town of the area famous for its traditional type of breads. Have a break to recover then proceed to Verrucola, one of the most beautiful castles of the area and finally cycle in relax all th wat down to Aulla.

The “three passes” cycling tour of  Cisa, Silara and Cirone mountain passes – 8 hrs

This itinerary is dedicated to the mountain heights, uncontaminated nature and outstanding panoramas. Depart from Pontremoli and climb along the Cisa pass road following the ancient pilgrims footsteps, then descend as far as Berceto (famous for its mushrooms) where have a snack and face the second climb of the day to the Silara pass, afterwards ride along the mountain ridge among small lakes and fir woods until doing the last effort form climbing the Cirone pass. After that descend smoothly all the way down to Pontremoli.

The “castles and villages” cycling tour of Pontremoli, Bagnone, Filetto, Villafranca – 4 hours

This route does not present serious difficulties and definitely is one of the pretties to pedal due to the combination of flat roads, gentle hills, pretty villages. Depart from Pontremoli, called the “gateway of Tuscany” due to its strategic location along the Francigena trail, ride down the Magra river valley as far as Filattiera with its St. George watch tower, then move to Malgrate with its imposing castle and Castiglione del Terziere famous for its fortified hamlet. After a short rest ride downhill to Filetto for tasting some local specialties then return to Pontremoli.
